2015 - Antonio Galloni presents Vinous

  • Terlaner I Grande Cuvée 2012 '12

    95 points
Terlano once again sets the bar very high with their flagship Terlaner I (Primo) Grande Cuvée, here in its second release. Insprired by the epic wines of the house's past, the 2012 presents myriad layers of expression in its explosive, mineral-laced personality. Smoke, slate, graphite, orange peel and butter are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. Mesmerizing in its beauty the Terlaner I (Primo) Grande Cuvée is simply stunning from the very first taste. I followed a bottle over several days, during which the wine just got better and better. Terlano has set a very high price, but the wine delivers the goods.
  • Chardonnay 2003 '03

    94 points
Another superb wine, the 2003 Chardonnay Rarity is surprisingly vibrant, especially considering how brutally hot the year was. A host of orange peel, smoke, spices, hazelnuts and tropical fruit blossom in a Chardonnay endowed with a real sense of phenolic weight and structure. The 2003 is in a beautiful place in its aging curve today, and should continue to drink well for another decade, perhaps longer.
  • Porphyr '12

    94 points
Terlano's 2012 Lagrein Riserva Porphyr is darker and inkier than the Riserva. It also captures more of the blue/purplish notes that are so typical of Lagrein. Cloves, licorice, graphite and menthol add the final shades of nuance. As always, Terlano presents a distinctly tamed style of Lagrein, but at the same time, all of the elements are very nicely balanced. What a gorgeous wine this is.
  • Vorberg '12

    94 points
A vivid, wonderuflly alive wine, the 2012 Pinot Bianco Riserva Vorberg is intensely mineral and savory in style, with the fruit pushed a bit to the background. Slate, smoke, dried pear, sage and petrol add nuance on the beautifully textured, focused finish. This is a super-classic expression of Vorberg and the Terlano house style. The 2012 Vorberg is a real highlight in this group of current releases.
  • Nova Domus '12

    92 points
The 2012 Terlaner Riserva Nova Domus is another gorgeous, super-expressive white from Terlano. Here the flavors are bold and incisive. Next to the Terlaner I (Primo) Grande Cuvée, the Nova Domus is much more forward and fruit-driven, with fewer shades of minerality but more overall immediacy. Apricot pit, peach, smoke and lightly honeyed notes meld into the supple, inviting finish.
  • Lunare '13

    92 points
The 2013 Gewürztraminer Lunare is subtle and finessed, with impeccable overall balance and a sense of restraint that is noticeable. Orange blossom, mint and lightly honeyed notes flesh out in the glass. The effortless, racy style is hugely appealing.
  • Kreuth '13

    92 points
The 2013 Chardonnay Kreuth is rich, bold and absolutely impeccable. A host of orange peel, butter, spice and tropical-inflected fruits wrap around the palate. Clean mineral notes support the exuberant finish. The 2013 is quite delicious today, but it also has more than enough depth to drink well for at least a handful of years. In 2013, the Kreuth is a clear overachiever.
  • Gries '12

    91 points
Smoke, tobacco, iron, black cherries, leather and incense are some of the notes that flesh out in the 2012 Lagrein Gries Riserva. Intense, powerful and fleshy, the 2012 is super-expressive today, with distinct floral and savory overtones that balance the pure intensity of the fruit. Pomegranate, black cherries and new leather add complexity on the decidedly vertical finish. Much of the wildness of Lagrein is tamed, but there is no shortage of complexity or personality.
  • Quarz '13

    91 points
The 2013 Sauvignon Quarz is a bit light in this vintage, but the flavors are precise, bright and nicely delineated. Veins of underlying salinity are woven into grassy, herbal notes in a chiseled, varietally expressive Sauvignon. I would prefer to drink the 2013 on the younger side given its mid-weight structure.
